Article:
The fuel for success
I've
been speaking recently with a woman who's in the process of setting
up in business for the first time, and who I predict is going
to be extremely successful in her chosen profession because, unknowingly,
she is operating at a very high level of attraction.
Why is she being so attractive? Firstly, she's in the job that's
perfect for her, she's "following her bliss". This doesn't only
mean that she's doing something she enjoys, she's identified the
pursuit which she's truly passionate about. And passion is the
fuel for success.
Pursuits that we're passionate about are the ones that tie in
with the core essence of who we are - when I'm helping coaching
clients get clear on their essence, their inner values, I'll sometimes
ask the following questions:
"If you had all the money you could ever want or need, what would
you choose to spend your time doing?"
"If you were also in the perfect relationship, what pursuits and
interests would you still make time for?"
For those of us for whom our work is already our passion, following
our bliss doesn't cease when we close the office door, we take
it with us into so many other areas of our lives as it's an integral
part of us. People can often find defining their passion a challenge,
because it's so tied into who we are that we take it for granted.
Also we discount our passions as a means of earning our living
because they seem too easy - we get caught up in the trap designed
by our education system that for a subject to be worthwhile we
have to study hard for it. Yet the people who are truly successful
are often those who have taken a pursuit that they enjoyed and
had a talent for and then built on it - Bill Gates with computers,
Richard Branson with entrepreneurship, for example - and put their
all into it. I'd guess it felt comparatively easy for them because
they were passionate about what they were doing and thus invested
their time and energies willingly.
We also try and fit our passion into the existing little boxes
of the career or business world, rather than thinking "How can
I share my passion with others who are interested?" This goes
against the rules of traditional marketing which state that you
should research the market and find a need, and then produce a
product or service to fulfil it. The Attraction Marketing approach
is to create your product or service based on your passion, and
then let people who share your interest know what you're offering
- you'll create your own market. An example I read of recently
in the UK was of a company called Green & Black who produce organic
chocolate; they followed exactly that process and are proving,
to the amazement of the marketing experts, to be a financial success.
Returning to my new business lady, the second way in which she
is being very "attractive" is that, because she's "following her
bliss", she is having such pure unadulterated fun in establishing
her business, it's all the most marvellous adventure of which
she seems to be revelling in every joyous moment.
And the doors are definitely opening up for her - as Joseph Campbell
wrote:
"If you do follow your bliss you put yourself on a kind of
track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and
the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living.
When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in your
field of bliss, and they open doors to you. I say, follow your
bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't
know they were going to be."
If you knew you could follow
your bliss and it would be as successful as you could dream of,
what first step towards it could you take today?
